Kettering is located five miles south of Dayton, which is near the center of the Miami Valley River Valley. Kettering is in a "moderate" climate region. The highest elevation in Kettering is 1,090 feet above sea level; the lowest elevation is 750 feet; and the mean elevation is 920 feet. Precipitation — which is rather evenly distributed throughout the year — and moderate temperatures help to make the Miami Valley a rich agricultural region. High relative humidity during much of the year causes some discomfort to people with allergies. Temperatures of zero or below will be experienced in about four years out of five. Extreme temperatures are usually of short duration. The downward slope of about 700 feet in the 163 miles of the Miami River may have some moderating influence on the winter temperatures in the Miami Valley.

The average last occurrence of freezing temperatures in the spring is mid-April, while the average first occurrence in the autumn is late October. Cold, polar air flowing across the Great Lakes causes much cloudiness during the winter and is accompanied by frequent snow flurries. These add little to the total snowfall.

KETTERING SCHOOLS

City of Kettering
About Schools
Kettering is well-known for its quality school system and was named a "Top 100" school district by Money magazine in 1995. Residents of the district are proud of their schools and have continually supported the district, both financially and in a volunteer capacity. The Kettering School District, the second largest in Montgomery County, currently serves about 8,000 students and has enjoyed modest growth in enrollment since the early 1990s.

The school district maintains a tradition of providing excellent educational programming and services. Students at the middle and high schools can choose from among more than 200 courses during their secondary years. With strong gifted, honors, advanced placement and vocational education programs, Kettering secondary schools offer something for every student. The district, likewise, offers a full range of course at the elementary level, and has one of the finest special education programs in the state of Ohio.

The district has nine elementary schools, serving kindergartners through fifth-graders; two middle schools serving sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders; and a four-year high school. Kettering Fairmont High School is considered a "comprehensive" high school, providing both college preparatory and school-to-work opportunities for students. High school students continually rate in the top brackets on various college entrance and National Merit exams, and more than 100 students have received National Merit Scholarship recognition over the past decade. Currently, about 80 percent of Fairmont’s graduates go on to post-secondary education.

For more information, access the Kettering City Schools website at www.ketteringschools.org or e-mail the Community Relations Coordinator, Kari Basson, or call 937-499-1458.

The Kettering Board of Education meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at the board offices.
